Many people are embarrassed when they have crooked, chipped or discoloured teeth or noticeable dental gaps. The dentist can use veneers to mask such flaws, improving the colour of a tooth, filling a gap or chip and making a crooked tooth look straight again.

Good-looking teeth will make you feel confident when you look in the mirror or when introducing yourself to someone new. No more worries about breaking into a beautiful smile anytime you feel like it.

What is a veneer?

A veneer can be constructed in the mouth using multiple layers of tooth-coloured composite filling or it can be fabricated as a porcelain shell to be placed over the tooth. A veneer is attached to a tooth permanently and it will look and feel like a real tooth.

When is a veneer necessary?

A veneer can be used to mask irregularities of your teeth such as:

  • crooked teeth

  • misshapen teeth

  • gaps between the teeth

  • stained teeth

  • discoloured teeth

  • chipped teeth

Materials

At Arnout & Hobbelink Dentists you can choose from two types of veneer:

Porcelain veneers

  • Porcelain veneers are the most natural-looking.

By building up the veneer in layers, an ideal colour-match is achieved and the veneer will be indistinguishable from your other teeth.

  • A porcelain veneer is more expensive than composite but will maintain its gloss and colour for many years.

This gives you room for choice based on your dental situation, your personal preference and your financial means.

  • Modern techniques have greatly increased the durability of veneers. Porcelain veneers are non-toxic and usually last at least ten years.

  • A porcelain veneer is custom-made for you at a dental laboratory and is placed during two sessions with your dentist.

Composite veneers

  • The composite material is precisely matched to the colour of the surrounding teeth.

Because the dentist applies the material in layers, it looks completely natural.

  • A composite veneer is less expensive than a porcelain veneer, but may discolour sooner.

How noticeably or how soon a composite veneer may discolour will vary per person. It depends on how well you take care of your teeth. Coffee, black tea, red wine and smoking may negatively affect the colour of the veneer. A composite veneer requires more care than a porcelain one.

  • A composite veneer can be placed by the dentist in one session. Very little filing is required and composite veneers usually last for many years.

But we don’t charge more than other dentists.

What can I expect from a veneer procedure at Arnout & Hobbelink Dentists?

TIP: Would you like to see how a veneer will look before actually undergoing a procedure? Let us know and we can arrange for you to have a ‘wax up’ or ‘try in’ which offers a preview of how it will look for you. That can help you decide if you want to proceed with the treatment.

  • APPOINTMENT #1

The dentist will consult with you to determine the most suitable material and colour for the veneer. The colour will be precisely adjusted to match your surrounding teeth and look natural.

  • APPOINTMENT #2

If you decide on a composite veneer they will be constructed and applied in one session. You will go home on the same day with great-looking teeth.

For porcelain veneers two appointments are scheduled. During the first appointment the dentist will precisely file down the tooth / teeth followed by a scan of the teeth to be sent to the dental technician. The dentist will then apply temporary veneers which will be replaced with the porcelain veneers at the next appointment. The temporary veneers already look very natural and will protect your teeth until the permanent porcelain veneers are available.

  • APPOINTMENT #3 (for porcelain veneers)

The custom-made, porcelain veneers are ready. Your teeth are prepared by the dentist and an adhesive layer is applied to which the veneers are affixed. You can break into a beautiful smile again.

  • AFTER THE PROCEDURE

The veneers will feel like real teeth. If you had a tooth lengthened with the veneer, talking may feel a little different for a couple of days. You will soon get used to it.
