- Tandartsenpraktijk Arnout & Hobbelink - Amsterdam - ahtandartsen.nl

If you have teeth that are missing, discoloured or misshapen, you can have them replaced with a crown or a bridge. Crowns and bridges are designed to match the teeth they are replacing as precisely as possible – both visually and functionally. Their form and colour will match surrounding teeth in such a way that you will not be able to see or feel the difference between real or artificial teeth. Chewing and biting will be just as comfortable as it is with your natural teeth.

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap made of porcelain or ceramic which is bonded on to a filed-down tooth with dental cement. A crown enables a tooth to look and perform as it did when it was still healthy.

Do I need a crown?

A crown is the most effective solution for the following situations:

  • Replacement of a large or deep filling

Sometimes a large part of a tooth is lost due to tooth decay.

  • Improving your smile

A crown can be used to improve the look of a discoloured or misshapen tooth, usually in the front of your mouth.

  • Shielding of root canal treatment

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are generally more fragile. A crown protects the underlying tooth from trauma and from reinfection of the canals.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of two or more crowns plus a ‘dummy’ (the bridge). A bridge spans the area where teeth are missing and is attached to the teeth surrounding that space.

Do I need a bridge?

A bridge is the most effective solution for the following situations:

  • To improve chewing

  • To improve appearance

  • To prevent teeth growing crookedly or expanding

When teeth are missing, teeth from the opposite (upper or lower) jaw can grow into the open space. Similarly, teeth adjacent to the gap can grow towards each other resulting in crooked teeth.

What materials do Arnout & Hobbelink Dentists use for crowns and bridges?

In our dental practice we have an assortment of ceramics and porcelains from various dental laboratories. Our crowns and bridges are completely free of metal (you are free to request an alternative if you prefer).

Ceramic and porcelain are often confused. We generally choose ceramic for its strength and porcelain for aesthetics.

Crowns or bridges on molars require strong material that can withstand great pressure. For those towards the front of the mouth, appearance is also of great importance and crowns or bridges should be indistinguishable from adjacent teeth.

Our dentists can also combine materials by baking porcelain onto ceramic. This results in a double-layered crown instead of the usual single-layer.

We can help you choose which crown or bridge is most suitable for you based on the condition of your teeth, your preferences and your financial means.

Would you prefer gold or metal? Our dentists usually work with metal-free materials, but a gold or metal crown is also possible if you prefer.

Procedure for a ceramic or porcelain crown or bridge

The crown or bridge treatment is done as follows

  • APPOINTMENT #1

We strive for completely pain-free procedures, so a local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the area. If you prefer not to have the area numbed, please let us know. Just enough of the tooth is filed down on which to affix the crown or bridge.

The dentist will make a 3D scan of your teeth to determine, in consultation with you, the most appropriate, natural-looking tooth colour.

Thanks to the 3D scanner you no longer need to bite into gag-inducing, wet putty for tooth impressions.

The dentist will place a temporary crown and the 3D scan is sent to the dental technician who will manufacture a custom-made crown or bridge.

  • APPOINTMENT #2

The permanent crown or bridge is placed by the dentist.

  • AFTER TREATMENT: KEEPING YOUR TEETH CLEAN AT HOME

Good oral hygiene is of the utmost importance with crowns and bridges and improves their durability. You will receive detailed instructions on how best to care for the surrounding gums. This will ensure that the crown or bridge will last for at least ten years. Of course, accidents can happen, but crowns and bridges do not usually get damaged prematurely.
